Titles
Explore Titles
Explore Titles contains all the title entries organized by ID. For each title, the title list shows the Title ID, Title, Contributors (Roles), Firms, Date of Publication (Year), and Edition.
Title Fields
Unique WPHP ID number for this entry.
Full title as it appears on the title page, including subtitle, signed author, and edition statement, where applicable.
Linked to Persons. Contributor Roles include name of author(s) (if known) and, where appropriate, editors, translators, authors of introductory material, engravers, and women involved in printing, publishing, bookselling, etc. If any of the roles are attributed to a woman whose name is unknown, they will be listed as “Unknown.”
Author attribution as it appears on the title page or at the end of the preface. (Ex. “By a lady,” “By the author of … “)
If the author has signed the work with a name that is false or invented.
Linked to the Firms. Includes all printers, publishers, and booksellers listed in the imprint and colophon.
Indicates whether the title was published by the author or whether it was published by an external publishing firm.
Number of volumes that the edition was published in, using Arabic numerals.
Pagination
Number of pages per volume. Each volume indicated by a capital letter Roman numeral, prefatory matter indicated by lowercase Roman numerals, regular pagination indicated in Arabic numerals.
Date (Year) as it appears in the imprint. Where imprint information is unavailable, this will reflect the best estimate we have.
Edition as it appears in the edition statement on the title page; 1st editions are not indicated on title pages so in the case of an earliest known printing 1st edition is assumed.
Edition Number
Edition number translated into Arabic numerals as it appeared on the title page.
Date of First Publication
Date (Year) that the work was first published.
Information about printers, publishers, booksellers as shown on the title page.
Information, usually about the printer, including an address when provided, found at the front or the back of the book.
Copyright statement as printed in the book. Often found in American titles.
City or town and country in which the publication was printed as indicated by the imprint. Selecting location will open the Geonames ID.
The way that sheets have been folded and gathered into pages. Formats might include folio, quarto, octavo, duodecimo, sextodecimo, octodecimo, or vicesimo-quarto. For a description of each format, see Explore Formats. Selecting the format will open a page with description of format and list of titles published in that format.
Length of page measured in centimetres.
Width of page measured in centimetres.
Portion of price (pounds) as listed on the title page or in catalogs and periodicals.
Portion of price (shillings) as listed on the title page or in catalogs and periodicals.
Portion of price (pence) as listed on the title page or in catalogs and periodicals.
Total Price (in pence)
Total price as listed on the title page or in catalogs and periodicals expressed in pence. American currencies do not distinguish between specific states.
Non-UK Price
The price of titles outside the UK. American currencies, for example, do not distinguish between specific states.
Category into which the work falls. Genres might include Essays, Fiction Story, Memoirs, Political Writing, etc. For a description of each genre, see Explore Genres. Selecting the genre will open produce a list of all titles in that genre.
Sources consulted to populate the title fields. Sources include the source name and ID. The source ID will vary according to the source, but will correspond to a unique identifier for the source consulted. For descriptions of sources, see Explore Sources. Selecting the source name will open a page with information about that source and a list of titles that use that source. If the source ID is hyperlinked, selecting it will take you to the original source record.
Lists associated titles.
Call numbers for locations of copies of the title in various libraries.
Any important information that does not fit in the above fields will be indicated here, as well as links to sources that do not have a unique identifying number.
Indicates that a physical copy of the title has been consulted to verify title information.
Indicates that either two sources, one being a digitization, have been consulted to verify title information or the title has been hand-verified. One exception includes the combination of the ESTC and The English Novel, both independently verified sources. For a detailed description of the verification process, see Project Methodology.
Indicates that an attempt has been made to identify two sources to verify the title information but that only one source has been found.
Provides citation format for that title information for the user in MLA 8, APA 7, Chicago/Turabian 17, and BibTex. Select tabs to change format.
To make suggested revisions or additions on a Title record, select Suggestions and Comments and fill out the form.
Search Titles
Search Titles defaults to a basic title search function with a Results Sorted By field and an Advanced Search button.
Search Title
Text search for all or part of a Title.
Results Sorted By
Sort results alphabetically, by Publication Date, by First Publication Date, and by Edition Number.
Title ID
Search for a title by entering the exact Title ID number.
Filter by Person
Titles can be filtered by Person ID, all or part of a Person’s Name, by Gender (Female, Male, Transgender, or Unknown), and by Contributor Role.
Signed Author
Text search for title by Signed Author field.
Pseudonym
Text search for title by Pseudonym field.
Filter by Firm
Titles can be filtered by Firm ID, all of part of a Firm’s Name, by Firm Gender (Female, Male, Unknown), by Firm Role, and by Firm Address.
Self-Published
Search by titles known to have been Self-Published.
Volumes
Search for a title by entering the exact number of Volumes.
Date of Publication
Search for the year a title was published (e.g. 1795) or a range of years (1790-1800) or partial range of years (*-1800).
Date of First Publication
Search for the year a title was first published (e.g. 1795) or a range of years (1790-1800) or partial range of years (*-1800).
Edition Number
Search for a title by entering the Edition Number in Arabic numerals.
Edition Statement
Search by Edition Statement (eg. First Irish Edition).
Imprint
Text search for title by Imprint field.
Colophon
Text search for title by Colophon field.
Copyright Statement
Search by Copyright Statement as printed in the book.
Location of Printing
Searches Location of Printing field.
Format
Titles can be filtered by the Format in which they were printed. A description of all formats can be found in Explore Formats.
Length
Search for a title by entering the Length of the page in centimetres.
Width
Search for a title by entering the Width of the page in centimetres.
Filter by Price
Title search can be filtered by Price (pound) field, Price (shilling) field, and/or Price (pence) field. Filter search by Equal To (exact), Less Than, or Greater Than the amount entered.
Genre
Titles can be filtered by the Genres in which they were printed. A description of all formats can be found in Explore Genres.
Shelfmark
Search for a title by entering the Shelfmark.
Filter by Source
Titles can be filtered by Sources or the Source ID. A description of all sources can be found in Explore Sources.
Notes
Search by the Notes field.
Hand-Verified
Title search can be filtered by titles which have been Hand-Verified by clicking Yes, or not Hand-Verified by clicking No. The default setting of None removes the filter.
Verified
Title search can be filtered by titles which have been Verified by clicking Yes, or not Verified by clicking No. The default setting of None removes the filter.
Attempted Verification
Title search can be filtered by texts which have had an Attempted Verification by clicking Yes, or no Attempted Verification by clicking No. The default setting of None removes the filter.
Search results appear below the search fields. The search can be reset using the reset button. A list of the entries generated by the search can be exported using the export button. Results can be exported with MLA 8, APA 7, Chicago 17, or as a BibTex file. Search results include the Title ID, Title, Contributors (Roles), Firms (Roles), Date of Publication (Year), and Edition.
Persons
Explore Persons
Explore Persons contains all the persons entries organized alphabetically by last name. Select ID to sort by ID number. For each entry, the person list shows the ID, Last Name, First Name, Gender, Date of Birth, and Date of Death.
Person Fields
Unique ID number for this entry.
Person’s last name. We mostly include a woman’s maiden name, though we will provide a married name for well-known writers.
Person’s first name or middle name. Where appropriate, Miss, Mrs., Mr., Lady, or Madame may also be included, especially if the first name is unknown.
Title
Where appropriate, full aristocratic title.
Gender classifications are female, male, transgender, and unknown.
If known, YYYY-MM-DD.
If known, YYYY-MM-DD.
If known, city or town is geotagged.
If known, city or town is geotagged.
Link to the person’s Virtual International Authority File if available.
Link to the person’s entry in Wikipedia if available.
Link to an image of the person if available.
Notes
Any important information that does not fit in the above fields will be indicated here.
Titles
List of all titles a person is associated with including the Contributor Role, Title, and Date.

To make suggested revisions or additions on a Person record, select Suggestions and Comments and fill out the form.
Explore Contributor Roles
Each person entry is assigned one or more of the following roles.
Selecting the Contributor Role or the number of contributions will open a page with the role name and description and a list of all persons and the titles associated with that role. This list is sorted alphabetically.
The person responsible for the composition of the work.
Bookseller
Indicates the person running the firm that sold the work. This role is included if the firm is female-run.
Compiler
The person who selected the works contained within a text. Usually applies to anthologies and collections.
Composer
The person responsible for the composition of music, most often in a play or psalm.
Editor
The person who selected, revised, and arranged the work for print.
Engraver
The person responsible for turning an illustration into an engraving.
Illustrator
The person who created the image from which any engravings were created. Usually different than the Engraver.
Introducer
The person who composed the introduction or any prefatory material for the work. Must be a different person than the author.
Printer
Indicates the person running the firm that printed the work. This role is included if the firm is female-run.
Publisher
Indicates the person running the firm for whom the work was printed. This role is included if the firm is female-run.
Translator
The person who is responsible for translating the text from one language to another.
Search Persons
The Search Persons page defaults to a basic person search by name with a custom search page available via the Advanced Search button. Select a method to sort results with the Results Sorted By dropdown menu. The Advanced Search allows users to search for specific persons by fields associated with a person. Search results return all person entries that include the search term. Selecting a person will return all titles associated with that person.
Search Persons by Name
Text search for all or part of a personal name.
Results Sorted By
Choose a sort method for the results.
Person ID
Search for a person by entering the exact Person ID number.
Gender
Search for persons by Gender (Male, Female, Transgender, or Unknown). Leave the field blank to include all genders.
Date of Birth
Search for person by birth year using a single year (e.g. 1795) or a range of years (1790-1800) or partial range of years (*-1800).
Date of Death
Search for person by death year using a single year (e.g. 1795) or a range of years (1790-1800) or partial range of years (*-1800).
Place of Birth
Text search for a person by Place of Birth.
Place of Death
Text search for a person by Place of Death.
VIAF URI
Enter a VIAF URI to check if we have a corresponding record. Enter “blank” to find records which do not have VIAF URIs.
Wikipedia URL
Enter a Wikipedia URL to check if we have a corresponding record. Enter “blank” to find records which do not have Wikipedia URLs.
Image URL
Enter an Image URL to check if we have a corresponding record. Enter “blank” to find records which do not have image URLs.
Filter by Title
Person search can be filtered by Title ID, by all or part of a Title, by Contributor Role, by Date of Publication, by Genre, or by Location of Printing.

Firms
Explore Firms
Explore Firms contains all the firm entries organized by ID. For each entry, the firm list shows the ID, Name, Street Address, City (Country), Start Date, End Date.
Firm Fields
Unique ID number for this entry.
Most complete name of the firm known. We use square brackets to distinguish between firms at different locations with the same name.
Gender categories include male, female, or unknown. Firms are indicated as female if there is at least one female that has been conclusively identified as such.
Street address of the firm, if known. Each time a firm moves to a new location, a new firm entry is made. Addresses are usually drawn from imprints.
City or town in which the firm’s street address is located; geotagged.
The date at which the firm began operations, if known, YYYY-MM-DD.
The date at which the firm ceased operations, if known, YYYY-MM-DD.
Sources
Sources consulted to populate the firm fields.
Related People
People related to this firm in some way.
Related Firms
Firms related to this firm in some way.
Notes
Any other important information that does not fit in the above fields will be indicated here.
Titles
List of all titles associated with this firm, including the Firm Role, Title, Author, and Date of Publication (Year).
Export Citation List
Export a list of all titles associated with the firm in MLA 8, APA 7, Chicago 17, BibTex, and CSV. Select tabs to change format.

Explore Firm Roles
Each firm is assigned one or more of the following roles.
Bookseller
The firm from which the work can be purchased. Indicated by the phrase “sold by” in the imprint.
Engraver
The person responsible for turning an illustration into an engraving.
Printer
The firm responsible for compositing and printing the work. Usually indicated by the phrase “printed by” in the imprint and/or the colophon.
Publisher
The firm that takes on the financial responsibility for the editing, printing, and distribution of the work. Usually indicated by the phrase “printed for” in the imprint. In the event that a work has been self-published, this will be indicated in the Self-Published field.
Unknown
No firm role indicated in the imprint.
Search Firms
Search Firms defaults to a basic firm search by name with a custom search page available via the Advanced Search button. Select a method to sort results with the Results Sorted By dropdown menu. Advanced Search allows users to search for a specific firm by fields associated with a firm.
