The publishers were in business under the name Munroe, Francis & Parker, at no. 4 Cornhill, in 1808-1810, and 1814-1816. Though intended for young readers, the present title is not on the lengthy list of juvenile books advertised in the publisher's edition of Gustavus and the macaw, which was probably issued early in 1816. Other editions of The history of an officer's widow were issued in 1815 by William Gilley in New York, and by Mathew Carey in Philadelphia; no earlier American editions are recorded. The present edition, therefore, probably was published in 1816.
