Notes From AAS: Except for the changed title page, signatures [A]-B (containing the calendar pages and other astronomical matter), and D3-4, are offprints from The Pennsylvania almanac for 1814, by Joshua Sharp, printed at Philadelphia by Ann Cochran Coles.
Stewart also issued Stewart's East and West Jersey almanac for 1814, "by Joshua Sharp," printed for him at Philadelphia by "Ann Coles, late Ann Cochran." This almanac is identical through signature D with Stewart's Washington almanac, except for the title page. He also issued Stewart's Columbian almanac (New Brunswick), "by Andrew Bears [Beers]," again consisting of the same material in a slightly different arrangement.
The Pennsylvania almanac printed by Coles, and thus the three Stewart almanacs whose astronomical matter is offprinted from it, were all in fact calculated by Sharp. The calculations and astronomical notes on the calendar pages, together with the eclipse predictions, duplicate those in his other almanacs for 1814 published in Philadelphia, Trenton, and Wilmington (Del.) The false attributions to the additional well-known calculators Shoemaker and Beers were intended to widen the sale of Stewart's almanacs.
