Notes The title page attributes this chapbook to Isaac Bickerstaff, but Bickerstaff was a well-known pseudonym for both Jonathan Swift and Richard Steele. Thomas Frost in In Kent with Charles Dickens reports reading an edition of Ambrose Gwinett that was dated 1731. Frost speculates that the author was “probably a Grub Street hack, who would write the story for a guinea, of, for the same honorarium, produce a pamphlet to be published with the name of some peer or M.P. on the title page; and he may have lent his name to Swift and Steele, for some such consideration, and allowed them afterwards to treat him as a non-existent person” (Bearden-White 144)
