"Having often been called upon for a reprint of the following pages, which appeared in the Winter's wreath of 1828, under the title of 'Gift from an abbess to her nuns,' I now present it to the public ... since it is a little specimen mostly selected from the celebrated work of the venerable Mère Agnès Arnaud. It is however necessary to explain, that the following essays were not written in their present form for the press. They form a small portion of a volume originally intended solely for my own benefit ... That having been my object, full freedom is used in leaving out whatever seemed only suitable to a monastic institute, whilst on the other hand, other passages are paraphrased, or occasionally expanded, that appeared more especially applicable to a daily Christian walk or conversation."--Preface, p.
