Notes From AAS:
Attributed to" John Purdon, Sen." in a ms. annotation on the Historical Society of Pennsylvania copy. However, the Historical Society's online catalog attributes the work to Paul Beck, Jr. The attribution to Purdon, who emigrated to Philadelphia sometime before 1768, seems more likely as at 73 years of age in 1813 (20 years older than Beck), Purdon would more plausibly be regarded as "an old citizen." The verses on the title page also support the attribution to Purdon, who in 1804 published a collection of poems ("A leisure hour; or, A series of poetical letters;" Shaw 7145) under the pseudonymous phrase "a citizen of Philadelphia."
