AAS Notes:
Title to v. 2 varies slightly, with "Two or more syllables." added after "Part II."
Welch suggests Lady Eleanor Fenn ("Mrs. Lovechild") as the author. Set apparently based upon an edition issued in London by Darton and Harvey in 1799.
Accompanied by 324 cuts on LIV plates, an "Advertisement" (8 p.), and 5 unnumbered cards. Card 1 is an alphabet "for cutting into single letters." Card 2 consists of lower-case consonants, with one or two spaces after each, ruled into squares. Card 3 has lower-case vowels and the letter y "to place after the consonants" on card 2. Card 4 is a "frame on which to place the moveable letters, for spelling words." Card 5 is a frame "for concealing the cuts till the names have been read." The set is housed in a wooden box (7 x 18 x 12 cm.) with hand-colored engraved paper label: Douceurs. Published by J. Johnson no. 147 Market-Street.
Wooden box has metal engraving of a bird signed "W.R. [i.e., William Ralph] sc." Ralph probably engraved the object plates as well.
"A Dictionary, or, Index to a set of cuts for children" (1804) and booklets entitled "A List of nouns" (1804) and "The Book of nouns" (1804) belong with this or a similar set of cuts, but are not present in the item in hand. Cf. Advertisement.
Plates XXXVII-LIV were also issued in a volume with remarks, as "The Father's gift" (1804).
